What to Do If Your WordPress Site Looks Compromised

An unfamiliar administrator, unexpected redirects or altered pages deserve prompt investigation. They do not all prove the same type of incident. Begin with a short record of what you observed and when, then work with your hosting provider or a qualified specialist rather than deleting files at random.

Preserve evidence and contain exposure

Save relevant logs and a restricted copy of the affected installation before cleanup where practical. Treat that copy as potentially unsafe and protect any personal information it contains. If visitors are being redirected or exposed to harmful content, coordinate temporary isolation or a maintenance page with the provider.

Use a trusted device and verified access channels. Avoid entering new credentials into a site that may still capture them. Record unfamiliar accounts, recently changed files and warnings without running suspicious files to see what they do.

Recover from a known clean state

A scanner can identify indicators, but removing its findings does not prove the whole site is clean. Replace affected core, themes and plugins from legitimate sources and review the database, scheduled tasks and configuration. A backup is helpful only if it predates the compromise and the original weakness is corrected.

  • Review administrator accounts and remove unauthorized access through a safe channel.
  • Update vulnerable components and eliminate unused software.
  • Rotate affected credentials and invalidate sessions as appropriate.
  • Inspect hosting, email and domain access as part of the same incident.

Check the route back into production

Test forms, login and pages before reopening the site. Monitor logs and unexpected changes afterward. If search engines flagged the site, complete their recovery process after cleanup. Consider whether the incident affected customer data and obtain appropriate professional advice for any resulting obligations.

With OrienHost WordPress hosting, confirm the available support scope for incident response. Share symptoms and timestamps through the verified support route; never include passwords or secret keys in a public comment.
