Domain Transfer vs Website Migration: Plan Both Clearly
Moving a domain to a new registrar does not move your website files. Moving a website to a new hosting account does not transfer domain ownership. Treating these as separate projects prevents an apparently simple move from interrupting several services at once.
Know what each move changes
A registrar transfer changes the company managing the domain registration. The exact requirements depend on the extension and applicable transfer rules. Check eligibility, any transfer locks, the authorization process and renewal implications with the current and destination registrars. Avoid starting close to expiry without understanding the available options.
A website migration copies application files, databases and configuration to a new environment. It may also include mailboxes, scheduled jobs and DNS changes, but none of those should be assumed. Write an explicit inventory of what is in scope.
Move the website with a test window
Prepare the destination first. Test the application using an appropriate preview method before directing visitors to it. Check forms, login, images and any checkout flow. For a site that accepts orders or registrations, plan how to prevent data written during the move from being lost or split between two servers.
- Record where the domain, DNS, website and email are managed.
- Keep a backup of files and the matching database.
- Confirm the destination's runtime and resource requirements.
- Keep the previous service available for a defined rollback window.
Keep DNS continuity during the transfer
Do not assume DNS hosting survives a registrar transfer indefinitely. Ask whether the current DNS service depends on keeping the registration there. Copy the zone and arrange continuity before the old service is cancelled.
When considering OrienHost web hosting, make a clear move checklist and confirm the actual migration scope. You may be able to migrate the website while leaving the registration where it is, then handle a registrar transfer separately once the website is stable.
